Philosophy of Computational Neuroscience

Just like experimental neuroscience, computational neuroscience can be done well or poorly.

This post was motivated by Janet Stemwedel's recent post in Adventures in Ethics and Science about the philosophy of computational neuroscience. There seem to be three views of the use of computational models in biology and neuroscience:

1. All models are bullshit.
2. Models rely on MATH, so of course they are right.
3. Some models are good and some are bad.

Obviously the first two are extremes and usually posited by people who don't know anything about computational neuroscience, and I am clearly advocating the third view. The only problem is that it is hard to tell if a model is good or bad unless you know a lot about it.

So here are some general principles that can help you divide the good and the bad in computational neuroscience.

1. The authors use the correct level of detail.

If you are trying to test how brain regions interact with each other, you don't need to model every single cell in each region, but you need to have enough detail to differentiate the brain regions from one another. Similarly, if you are trying to test how molecules diffuse within a dendrite, you don't need to model a whole cell, but you need to have enough detail to differentiate one molecule type from another. If you are trying to test how a cell processes information, you need to have a cell, as you may have learned in how to build a neuron.  Basically a model can be bad simply because it is applied to the wrong question.

2. The authors tune and validate their model using separate data.

When you are making a model you tune it to fit data. For example, in a computational model of a neuron you want to make sure your particular composition of channels produces the right spiking pattern. However, you also want to validate it against data. So how is tuning different from validating? Tuning is when you change the parameters of the model to make it match data. Validating is when you check the tuned model to see if it matches data. Good practice in computational neuroscience is to tune your model to one set of data, but to validate it against a different set of data.
For example, if a cell does X and Y, you can tune your model to effect X, but then check to see that the parameters that make it do X also make it do Y. Sometimes this is not possible. Maybe there is not enough experimental data out there. But if it is not possible, you should at least test the robustness of your model (see point 3).

One problem with computational models is that the specific set of parameters you've found by tuning the model might not be the 'right ones.' In fact they probably aren't the right ones. There are many different sets of parameters that can make a neuron spike slowly, for example.  And the chance that you hit on exactly the correct combination of things is very low. But that doesn't mean the model is not useful. You can still use the model to test effects that are not strongly altered by small changes in these parameters. So you need to test whether the specific effect you are testing is robust to parameter variation. If you are testing effect Q, you can increase the sodium channels by 10%, or the network size by 20% and see if you still get effect Q. In other words is 'effect Q' robust to changes in sodium channels or network size? If it is, then great! Your effect is not some weird fluke due to the exact combination of parameters that you have used.

These are the main things I try to pay attention to, but I am sure there are other important things to keep in mind when making models and reading about them. What are your thoughts?

Bibliotherapy, also known as Reading Therapy, is the inclusion of books to help a child or adult move through emotional experiences. From fiction, non-fiction, poetry or pictures books - a good dose of literature can really provide support and education.

Historically, bibliotherapy dates back to the 1930's when librarians began compiling lists of written material that helped individuals with trauma, thoughts, feelings or behaviors for therapeutic purposes.

I often use bibliotherapy to help people I work with move through difficult events or traumas, like death, divorce, chronic illness, teasing or hospitalization, just to name a few.

Generally speaking, bibliotherapy is designed to do the following:

* provide information

* provide insight

* stimulate discussion about problems

* communicate new values and attitudes

* create awareness that other people have similar problems

* provide realistic solutions to problems


Tips for Using Bibliotherapy

1) Do a "need" inventory. What is it that you or your child is struggling with? Sleeping issues? A loss? Bullying? Maybe your teen needs guidance in the dating world. Or your partner is facing a medical diagnosis. Zero in on the issue at hand so you can streamline your bibliotherapy search.

2) Google it. Now that you know what theme you're looking for, do an online search for books on the subject. You can also search online book stores and book lover websites for best selling books.

3) Set aside time. Once you have your book, make time to read it. If it's for your child, encourage but don't command the reading of it. Allow curiosity to take hold.

4) Quiet your mind and reflect.  After you've completed reading, still your mind and reflect on what you've learned. Whether it's new information, tips or techniques, give yourself space for them to find a comfortable place within you.

5) Reach out if reading isn't enough. Though bibliotherapy is a meaningful experience, sometimes it doesn't completely offer all the help you need. If so, consider reaching out to a professional for further support.

Do you know why we need to avoid coffee? This is because of the stimulating effect of caffeine which can last for many hours and interfere with your ability to fall asleep at night. Hence, you MUST avoid all sources of caffeine so that you can fall asleep more easily at night. There are many other sources of caffeine other than coffee, examples of foods that contain caffeine are, tea, soft drinks, some brands of aspirin and chocolate.

Help me sleep method #2: Limit your alcohol intake
Limiting your alcohol intake is an important factor in helping you sleep better. This is due to the alcohol's ability to disrupt brain electrical activity and undermine normal sleep architecture by suppressing the rapid eye movement stage of sleep.

Help me sleep method #3: Avoid or limit your naps
Try to avoid taking long naps in the afternoon. If you really want to refresh yourself, take a nap between 30 minutes - 1 hour. Do NOT sleep too much because napping can disrupt your natural sleep cycle and prevent you from feeling tired enough to fall asleep when you really want it, which is at night.


Help me sleep method #4: Don't force yourself to sleep if you are really not tired at all
This is the common mistake made by insomniacs. Do you know why I asked you not to force yourself to sleep if you are really not tired at all? It is because if you are not tired, you will set yourself up for tossing and turning in your bed, which is not what you wanted. Here's a tip: If you are awake after twenty minutes or so, get out of your bed and do something quiet and non-stimulating. After you start to feel tired, return back to your bed and try to sleep again.

Not all medications provided by your doctors are good for your sleep! There are some over-the-counter drugs which contain stimulants such as caffeine or pseudoephedrine that can prevent you from getting a good sleep! Hence, try to review your medications with your doctor before you take them before you sleep.

The above tips written are the proven techniques that I used to help me sleep. I hope that these tips and tricks to prevent insomnia can also help you sleep better. You see, the subconscious mind really cannot tell the difference between a real and an imaginary thing. For the subconscious part of the mind, it feels as if that lemon were real.

When a video game takes over, for the subconscious part of the mind it is as real as real can be.

Games such as World of Warcraft, Grand Theft Auto, etc demand that we use the subconscious mind to enter a world of virtual reality. To do this it is necessary to suspend our critical judgment, to forget that this is simply a make-believe game, and when we do this we enter into a trance state, where time becomes distorted and life itself seems to operate under different rules. It is in our subconscious that our emotions are triggered, and it is through our subconscious that we feel. In other words, when we enter the world of fantasy video games then we enter a state of hypnosis where reality becomes distorted and feelings rule. Fantasy has intertwined with reality - in a way very similar to that imaginary lemon.

For the majority of us, these games are harmless, an enjoyable distraction affording a good deal of fun. They may even provide some degree of useful social interaction, enabling the person to further develop interpersonal skills and explore their personality.

But this ostensible harmlessness is true of most addictive substances or behaviors: For most people alcohol is something that can be enjoyed now and then, it does not automatically become an addiction, just as buying lottery tickets does not necessarily lead on to compulsive gambling.

But for some, things snowball and escalate into addiction.

Though for the majority of people these games may well be safe, indeed, even therapeutic, for others video gaming will become a progressive activity that will eventually lead on to dependence and addiction.

And this is where the right form of hypnotherapy can really assist.

Because the addict has spent so much time in the trance state, he or she needs to be 'DE-hypnotized', as it were, and taught new ways to trigger positive feelings and cope with all kind of emotions.

The individual needs to learn new strategies for dealing with life on life's terms, without the emotional 'fix' that addiction may once have provided. A variety of different forms of therapy such as hypnotic regression, ego state, and cognitive behavioral therapy, might be involved in order to learn how to correct unhelpful though processing patterns.
